Gojō Bridge
五条大橋
A historic bridge spanning the Kamo River featuring ancient bronze ornaments and statues of legendary figures Benkei and Ushiwakamaru.
What it is
- A bridge spanning the Kamo River that serves as a boundary between two city wards.
- Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the bridge moved to this current location in 1590.
- The current structure was rebuilt in 1959 after a massive flood destroyed the previous one.
- The bridge is part of National Route 1 and Route 8 in Kyoto.
What to see
- Statues of the legendary figures Ushiwakamaru and Benkei near the west end.
- Sixteen bronze giboshi ornaments decorating the railings of the bridge.
- Original bronze ornaments that date back to the year 1645.
- A structure measuring 67 meters long and 35 meters wide over the water.
Getting there
- Kiyomizu-Gojo Station is located near the east end of the bridge.
