Hakodate Hachiman Shrine is a historic shrine with beautiful architecture and important cultural properties.

What it is

  • Shrine founded in 1445 by Kono Masamichi.
  • Dedicated to Hondawake-no-mikoto (Emperor Ojin).
  • Also enshrines Sumiyoshi Okami and Kotohira Okami.
  • Relocated to its current site in 1880.

What to see

  • Main shrine building rebuilt between 1912 and 1915.
  • Omikoshi (portable shrine) is a cultural property.

  • Annual festival is held on August 15th.
