Hakodate Hachiman Shrine
函館八幡宮
Hakodate Hachiman Shrine is a historic shrine with beautiful architecture and important cultural properties.
What it is
- Shrine founded in 1445 by Kono Masamichi.
- Dedicated to Hondawake-no-mikoto (Emperor Ojin).
- Also enshrines Sumiyoshi Okami and Kotohira Okami.
- Relocated to its current site in 1880.
What to see
- Main shrine building rebuilt between 1912 and 1915.
- Omikoshi (portable shrine) is a cultural property.
When to go
- Annual festival is held on August 15th.
