Hesaki Lighthouse

What it is

• A large stone lighthouse located on the northeastern tip of the Kiku Peninsula.
• One of five lighthouses promised under the Osaka Convention of 1867.
• Designed by Richard Henry Brunton and first lit on January 22, 1872.
• Designated as an Important Cultural Property and one of Japan's Top 50 Lighthouses.

What to see

• The original stone tower structure which became unmanned in 1981.
• A former official residence located on the lighthouse grounds.
• An old sundial used for timekeeping at the facility.
• A tide signal station standing adjacent to the main lighthouse tower.

When to go

• Public tours of the interior are available only once per year.

• The nearest bus stop is Shiranoe on the Nishitetsu line.
