Ishima
井島
A unique island split between two prefectures featuring ancient archaeological ruins and a history of maritime territorial disputes.
What it is
- An island in the Seto Inland Sea divided between Okayama and Kagawa Prefectures.
- The border was established in 1702 following a territorial dispute.
- All current residents live on the northern Okayama side of the island.
- The southern Kagawa side is currently uninhabited.
What to see
- Archaeological ruins containing artifacts from the Paleolithic and Jomon periods.
- Local nori seaweed cultivation facilities which serve as the primary industry.
- The site of the local school that closed in 2011.
- Landscape recovering from a 2011 forest fire that burned most of the island.
