What it is

  • An artificial lake in Higashi Village formed by the Fukuji Dam in 1974
  • The largest man-made lake in Okinawa Prefecture spanning six kilometers east to west
  • A reservoir created by damming the Fukuji River with water from two other dams
  • A protected habitat for endangered frogs, lizards, and Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtles

What to see

  • Released populations of Ryukyu ayu fish swimming within the lake waters
  • Dense evergreen forests covering the northern side of the lake area
  • Local pineapple fields situated along the southern side of the water
  • The massive dam structure that holds back the Fukuji River

  • Summer months when surface water temperatures can reach thirty-three degrees Celsius
