Mount Azumaya

What it is

• A 2,354-meter high stratovolcano located on the border of Nagano and Gunma prefectures
• One of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains consisting of three distinct volcanic bodies
• A peak formed from andesite lava featuring a three kilometer wide caldera
• A mountain also known by the name Mount Agatsuma

What to see

• The Yamaga Shrine Okusha East and West shrines located at the summit
• Yonako Falls situated on the edge of the volcanic caldera
• The Matoiwa rock formation which is a designated national natural monument
• Sugadaira Highland spreading to the west of the neighboring Mount Nekodake

When to go

• Summer months when the gondola lift operates from Palcall Tsumagoi
