Niigatajima

What it is

• A ten square kilometer island surrounded by the Shinano River and the Sea of Japan.
• The area became an island in 1972 following the opening of the Sekiya Diversion Channel.
• It contains the historic Furumachi city center and the Niigata City Hall.
• The terrain is characterized by sand dunes and low-lying coastal areas.

• The Bandai Bridge which connects the island to the opposite riverbank.
