What it is

  • A shell mound from the late Jomon period.
  • Designated a National Historic Site in 1957.
  • Discovered in 1891 by Masamichi Teraishi.

  • The mound is on a plateau at the foot of Ganjoji Mountain.
  • Divided into East Shell Mound and West Shell Mound.
  • Shell layers contain various shells, mainly clams.
