What it is

  • An uninhabited granite island located within the Biwako Quasi-National Park
  • The site of Kentoji Temple which was founded in 1655
  • A small landmass with a total circumference of approximately 600 meters
  • The entire island serves as the grounds for the temple

What to see

  • A ten meter tall rock inscribed with a Buddhist prayer
  • A twenty meter tall pillar featuring the Charter Oath
  • The Takeshima Kawamina snail which is an endemic species found here

Getting there

  • Accessible by ferry departing from Hikone Port
  • The boat trip from the port takes about twenty minutes
