Tateyama Volcano

What it is

• An active volcano in Toyama Prefecture also known as Midagahara Volcano.
• Located on the western slope of the Hida Mountains.
• Volcanic activity at this site began approximately 220,000 years ago.
• A constantly monitored volcano consisting of andesite and dacite lava.

What to see

• An erosion caldera measuring 6.5 kilometers from east to west.
• The Midagahara and Goshikigahara high-altitude plateaus.
• Thermal activity and volcanic gases in the Jigokudani area.
• Large-scale erosion control works within the Tateyama Caldera.

When to go

• Jigokudani has been closed to visitors since 2012 due to gas concentrations.
