碓氷第三橋梁
A massive four-arch brick railway bridge from 1893, now a scenic hiking trail through the mountains of Gunma.
What it is
- A four-arch brick railway bridge completed in 1893 for the Abt system railway.
- Commonly known as Meganebashi or Spectacles Bridge due to its distinctive shape.
- Designated as an Important Cultural Property exactly one hundred years after its construction.
- A structure standing 31 meters high and spanning 91 meters in length.
What to see
- The massive brickwork construction consisting of approximately two million individual bricks.
- The Apt Road hiking trail which follows the former railway track across the bridge.
- The four large arches designed by Charles Assheton Whately Pownall and Seiichi Furukawa.
Getting there
- Accessible by bus from JR Yokokawa Station to the bridge site.
- A one-hour walk from Yokokawa Station along the former railway path.
