Daikō-ji Temple
大光寺
Daikō-ji Temple is a historic Shingon Buddhist temple with unique statues and ancient trees.
What it is
- A temple of the Shingon-shu Chizan-ha sect.
- Founded by Yushin, who died in 1508.
- Located on the Nagamiya Sand Dune.
What to see
- An Eleven-faced Kannon statue is enshrined.
- The Buddha statue is a hibutsu (secret Buddha).
- A large ginkgo tree called "Oppai-sama."
- A Bodhi tree on the temple grounds.
- Bummei Waniguchi, a designated cultural property.
When to go
- Secret Buddha displayed once every 12 years.
- Display occurs in the Year of the Horse.
