Dōju-ji Temple: a historic Rinzai Zen temple with a primeval maple forest.
What it is
- A temple of the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai sect.
- Founded during the Eishō era (1504-1520).
- Established by Saitō Shinshiro Toshira.
- Principal image is Hokan Shaka Nyorai.
What to see
- Temple grounds cover about 10,000 tsubo.
- A primeval forest of 3,000 mountain maples.
- The current main hall, rebuilt in 1776.
- Main gate built during the Kyōhō era.
- Seated Amitābha statue from the Muromachi period.
