Enoki-sha is a historic shrine within Dazaifu Tenmangu, marking the final residence of Sugawara no Michizane.

What it is

  • A shrine within Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine grounds.
  • Also known as Enoki-dera.
  • Sugawara no Michizane lived here from 901 until 903.
  • Jomyoin was established in 1023 to mourn Michizane's spirit.

  • Building remains from the late 9th to early 10th century.
  • A small shrine dedicated to Jomyo-ni, Michizane's caregiver.
