What it is

  • A Rinzai Zen temple of the Myoshin-ji school.
  • Originally a villa built by Emperor Go-Mizunoo in 1639.
  • Converted into a Zen temple in 1678.
  • Designated an imperial prayer temple in 1680.

What to see

  • The main image is Shokannon.
  • A dry landscape garden, a national scenic spot.
  • Mount Hiei used as a borrowed landscape in the garden.
  • The main hall is called Hojo.
  • The Kannon-do enshrines Fukukensaku Kannon.
  • The temple gate, Tenjudō, rebuilt in 2015.
