Godai-dō
五大堂
Godai-dō is a historic temple hall, rebuilt in 1604, and a National Important Cultural Property.
What it is
- A Buddhist temple hall, part of Zuigan-ji Temple.
- Originally built in 807 by Sakanoue Tamuramaro.
- Rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune.
- Oldest Momoyama architecture in the Tohoku region.
What to see
- The current hall, rebuilt in 1604.
- Wooden statues of the Five Wisdom Kings.
- Main deity statues, unveiled every 33 years.
