Gokoku-in Temple
護国院
Gokoku-in Temple is a historic Tendai temple in Ueno Park, enshrining one of the Yanaka Seven Lucky Gods.
What it is
- A Tendai sect temple, founded in 1625 by Jojun.
- First sub-temple of Toeizan Kan'ei-ji.
- Also known as "Toeizan Shakado."
- Enshrines Daikokuten, a Yanaka Lucky God.
What to see
- The main hall, rebuilt in 1722 after a fire.
- A painting of Daikokuten, dedicated in 1639.
- The kuri (monks' living quarters), designed by Shinichiro Okada.
- The kuri is a registered tangible cultural property.
