Goryō Shrine
御霊神社
Ancient Nara shrine dedicated to Empress Inoue and Prince Todo, with unique screens and a grand festival.
What it is
- Founded in 800 by order of Emperor Kanmu.
- Enshrines Empress Inoue, Prince Todo, and Kotoshiro-nushi-no-kami.
- Also known as Nanto Goryō Shrine and Kibi Goryō.
- Rebuilt in its current location after a 1451 fire.
What to see
- A pair of six-fold screens depicting 36 immortal poets.
- Hatsu-do-sha, Inari-sha, Wakamiya-sha, and Hiruko-sha sub-shrines.
- Izumi Inari Shrine, invited from Kyoto in 1952.
When to go
- Festival features a portable shrine touring 70 towns over two years.
