In detail
Gyokuseninmaru Garden is a traditional-style garden on the grounds of Kanazawa Castle. Its stepped design creates a sense of verticality. Design features include a stair-like waterfall that flows from one of the garden’s distinctive stone walls. After sunset on Fridays, Saturdays, and days before public holidays, the garden is illuminated with spectacular colors that change with the seasons.
Tea and traditional sweets are available at the Gyokusen-an teahouse, overlooking the garden. Outside the teahouse, there is covered, free seating to leisurely view the garden from an elevated vantage point.
Gyokuseninmaru Garden is named after Gyokusenin, the wife of the second lord of the Kaga domain (present-day Ishikawa and around). Historically it was used as a private garden by the lords of the domain. It has been carefully restored to look much as it did at the end of the Edo period (1603–1867).
