In detail
Hanao Jinja Shrine, located next to Kanamine Jinja Shrine, is an auxiliary of the main Hanao Jinja in the city of Kagoshima on the mainland. It venerates Tango no Tsubone (d. 1216), the birth mother of Shimazu Tadahisa (1166–1227), who founded the Shimazu family, the daimyo of the Satsuma domain of southern Kyushu. Local residents visit to pray for safe childbirth, and a festival to pray for safe childbirth is held each year on the twelfth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar.
The main Hanao Jinja Shrine in Kagoshima was built in 1218. Shimazu Mitsuhisa (1616–1695), the 19th head of the Shimazu family, is said to have promoted the building of auxiliary shrines throughout the domain from 1681 to 1683, including the shrine on Kuchinoerabujima.
