Hase-dera Temple
長谷寺
A historic Nara temple featuring a massive Kannon statue, a National Treasure main hall, and thousands of seasonal peonies.
What it is
- Head temple of the Shingon-shu Buzan sect and eighth site on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.
- Dedicated to the Eleven-faced Kannon and featured in classical literature like The Tale of Genji.
- The current main hall was rebuilt in 1650 by the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
