Hirai Shrine
平井神社 (城陽市)
Hirai Shrine is a historic site in Joyo City with Momoyama period carvings and important cultural properties.
What it is
- A village shrine, formerly Gozu Tenno-sha until 1869.
- Dedicated to Kamuhaya Susanoo no Mikoto and other deities.
- Its current name, Hirai Shrine, was adopted in 1869.
What to see
- Main hall, built in 1645, with Momoyama period carvings.
- Wakamiya Shrine, built in the early Edo period.
- Torii gate, rebuilt in 1685.
- All three are Kyoto Prefecture registered cultural properties.
- Shrine grounds are a cultural property preservation area.
