Hōgon-ji Temple is a historic site, birthplace of Ippen, and a short walk from Dogo Onsen.

What it is

  • A Jishu sect temple founded in 665.
  • Ehime Prefecture designated historic site.
  • Birthplace of the Buddhist monk Ippen.
  • Rebuilt in 1292 and again in 2016.

What to see

  • The mountain gate, which survived a 2013 fire.
  • Rebuilt main hall and Ippen-dō Hall.
