Hōkai-ji Temple

Hokaiji is a historic Rinzai Zen temple with important statues and a pilgrimage connection.

- Founded in 1601 as a Jodo sect temple.
- Converted to Rinzai Zen in 1661.
- Sixth temple of the Ena Chubu New Shikoku 88 Pilgrimage.

- The principal image is Shaka Nyorai.
- Main hall built in 1700 by local parishioners.
- Wooden Shaka Nyorai statue moved here in 1870.
- Wooden En no Gyoja statue moved here in 1870.
- Manages the nearby Shimono Koshindo.
- Shimono Koshindo's building was constructed in 1778.
