Hokoji Temple is a historic Nichiren temple with tea plants, rebuilt after a fire.

What it is

  • A Nichiren sect temple, also known as Amachadera.
  • Founded in 1597 by Honjoin Nichinen.
  • Its mountain name is Shitennozan.

What to see

  • The main image and gate, which survived an 1883 fire.
  • A bell tower and Kishimojin-do, built in 1884.
  • The main hall, rebuilt in 1889.
  • The kuri (priest's living quarters), rebuilt in 1891.
  • 120 tea plants on the temple grounds.

When to go

  • Amacha Festival is held annually on the third Sunday of April.
