Hongaku-ji Temple is a historic Zen temple, site of the first US consulate in Yokohama.
What it is
- Soto Zen Buddhist temple, mountain name Aokiyama.
- Founded in 1226 by Eisai as a Rinzai Zen temple.
- Re-established as Soto Zen temple in 1532.
- Site of the first American Consulate in Yokohama (1859-1863).
What to see
- Main gate survived earthquakes and war damage.
