Hōrin-ji Temple
寶林寺
Hōrin-ji is a historic Zen temple with unique pagodas and Kannon statues.
What it is
- Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple.
- Founded in 1651 by Ofu Mine Gyōtaku.
- An earlier hermitage may have existed in 1628.
What to see
- Main hall rebuilt in 1704.
- Grave of the fourth abbot, Mitsuun Yōshi.
- Nōkyō-tō pagoda, built to end an epidemic.
- Ichiji Ichiseki Kuyō-tō next to the Nōkyō-tō.
- Water basin in the cemetery, built in 1724.
- Thirty-three Kannon stone statues, from 1793 to 1843.
