Ichijō-in Temple
一乗院
Ichijō-in Temple is a historic Buddhist temple, rebuilt many times, with a unique crest.
What it is
- A Buddhist temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism.
- Founded in 701 by Gyōki Bosatsu at Emperor Monmu's wish.
- Rebuilt multiple times after fires throughout its history.
- Became the official prayer place for the Shimabara domain.
What to see
- The main hall, rebuilt in 1985.
- A statue of Birushana Buddha, donated in 1999.
