Jion-ji Temple is a historic Tendai temple, home to important cultural properties and Xuanzang's remains.

What it is

  • It is a Tendai sect temple.
  • Founded by Ennin during the Tencho era (824-834).
  • It is the 12th temple of the Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
  • Tokugawa Ieyasu donated temple land in 1591.

  • The main image is Senju Kannon Bosatsu.
  • Xuanzang's remains were enshrined here in 1953.
