What it is

  • Jōdo-shū Buddhist temple, founded in 811 by Kūkai.
  • Main deity is Amitābha Tathāgata.
  • Renamed Jōhō-ji in 1564 by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
  • Easternmost of four temples on Terashita-dori.

What to see

  • Benzaiten, one of the Tōkai Shichifukujin, is enshrined.
  • Grave of Watanabe Kazan.
  • Jōhō-ji Kofun, an ancient burial mound.
