Kaikō-ji Temple is a historic Shingon temple, home to a massive, important Buddha statue.

What it is

  • A Shingon sect temple, sub-temple of Sennyū-ji Temple.
  • Founded in 1228 by Jōgyō Donshō.
  • Became a prayer temple for Emperor Go-Horikawa.
  • Moved to its current location in 1645.

What to see

  • The principal image is Shaka Nyorai.
  • A 5.4-meter tall standing Shaka Nyorai statue.
  • Statue is a joint work by Unkei and Tankei.
  • Graves of Itō Kashitarō and three others.

When to go

  • Enshrines Benzaiten during the Senzan Shichifukujin Pilgrimage.
