Kaikō-ji Temple
戒光寺
Kaikō-ji Temple is a historic Shingon temple, home to a massive, important Buddha statue.
What it is
- A Shingon sect temple, sub-temple of Sennyū-ji Temple.
- Founded in 1228 by Jōgyō Donshō.
- Became a prayer temple for Emperor Go-Horikawa.
- Moved to its current location in 1645.
What to see
- The principal image is Shaka Nyorai.
- A 5.4-meter tall standing Shaka Nyorai statue.
- Statue is a joint work by Unkei and Tankei.
- Graves of Itō Kashitarō and three others.
When to go
- Enshrines Benzaiten during the Senzan Shichifukujin Pilgrimage.
