Kaitoku Seamount
海徳海山
A submarine complex volcano in the Ogasawara Islands known for underwater eruptions that occasionally reach the ocean surface.
What it is
- A submarine complex volcano located on the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc.
- Consists of three distinct peaks formed by basaltic and dacitic lava.
- The highest peaks sit approximately 100 meters below the sea level.
- An active site where the Pacific Plate subducts under the Philippine Sea Plate.

- Discolored water and floating pumice during periods of volcanic activity.
- Occasional water columns reaching up to 160 meters high during major eruptions.
- The surrounding ocean 150 kilometers southwest of Chichijima island.
