An ancient shrine founded in 842 that houses a National Treasure suit of armor once owned by the Kai Genji clan.

What it is

  • Founded by Fujiwara no Itaseo in 842 by imperial order.
  • Enshrines Susanoo-no-Mikoto along with five male and three female deities.
  • Served as the guardian shrine for the powerful Kai Genji clan.
  • The current shrine buildings were rebuilt in 1969 following a fire.
