Ancient shrine in Nagoya, rebuilt after WWII, offers a glimpse into local history and festivals.

What it is

  • Founded in 948, formerly Kasuga Daimyojin or Kasuga-sha.
  • Dedicated to four deities: Takemikazuchi no Mikoto and others.
  • Received reverence from successive Owari Domain lords.
  • Buildings destroyed in 1945, rebuilt from 1958.

What to see

  • Main hall and other rebuilt shrine buildings.
  • Auxiliary shrine called Tenno-sha.
  • External Odataneko Shrine, renamed in 1909.

When to go

  • Autumn Grand Festival on October 19.
