Kenchū-ji Temple is a Sōtō Zen temple with historical graves and a unique hourglass.

What it is

  • A Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple.
  • Family temple of the Mizuno clan.
  • Founded in 1622 or 1626 by Mizuno Katsunari.
  • 7th sacred site of the Chūgoku Sanjū Jizōson pilgrimage.

  • Graves of successive lords of the Fukuyama Domain.
  • Mizuno family graveyard, including Katsunari and Tadashige.
  • A 400-year-old Dutch hourglass.
  • Hourglass donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu, runs for 100 minutes.
