Kinpu Shrine, located in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, holds a long history, founded in 709 by imperial decree. Originally known as Zao Gongen, it was renamed Kinpu Shrine during the Meiji Restoration.
The shrine was relocated to its current site in Matakura Village in 1242. It once had a castle, Zaodo Castle, associated with it. Although it burned down during the Genna era, it was rebuilt in 1913 after another fire.
Over the centuries, the shrine received support, including a donation of 300 koku from Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1649 and 40 koku from the Makino family of Echigo Nagaoka Domain. It was also the first prefectural shrine in Niigata Prefecture. The enshrined deity is Kanayamahiko-no-mikoto.
