Kitami Pass
北見峠
A high-altitude mountain pass connecting Kamikawa and Engaru, featuring a memorial to the prisoners who built the original road.
What it is
- A mountain pass sitting at an elevation of 857 meters in Hokkaido.
- The original road was constructed by prisoners from Abashiri Prison in 1891.
- Over 200 workers died during the rapid construction of this mountain route.
