What it is

  • Shrine on Kinkasan Island, founded in 750 AD.
  • Dedicated to Kanayamabiko-no-kami, Kanayamahime-no-kami, and Yaoyorozu-no-kami.
  • The entire island is considered a sacred area.
  • Formerly a prefectural shrine, now a Beppyo Shrine.

What to see

  • Current main hall, rebuilt after an 1897 fire.
  • Permanent lanterns are 4.8 meters tall.
  • These lanterns are among Japan's three largest.

When to go

  • Hatsumi Taisai festival: seven days from first Day of Serpent in May.
  • Deer Antler Cutting Festival: first and second Sundays of October.
