What it is
- Shrine on Kinkasan Island, founded in 750 AD.
- Dedicated to Kanayamabiko-no-kami, Kanayamahime-no-kami, and Yaoyorozu-no-kami.
- The entire island is considered a sacred area.
- Formerly a prefectural shrine, now a Beppyo Shrine.
What to see
- Current main hall, rebuilt after an 1897 fire.
- Permanent lanterns are 4.8 meters tall.
- These lanterns are among Japan's three largest.
When to go
- Hatsumi Taisai festival: seven days from first Day of Serpent in May.
- Deer Antler Cutting Festival: first and second Sundays of October.
