Kongō-ji Temple
金剛寺
A 14th-century Zen temple with a dry garden and a seasonal peony garden.
What it is
- A Rinzai Zen temple of the Engaku-ji school.
- Founded in 1394, originally named Koryuzan Kongoji.
- Principal image is Enmei Jizo Bosatsu.
What to see
- Four halls are on the temple grounds.
- Dry landscape garden, Togen no Niwa, with a sitting stone.
- Three Buddha stones are in the dry garden.
- Peony garden has 76 plants of 50 varieties.
When to go
- Peony garden is open only in April.
