Kōsō Hachiman Shrine
甲宗八幡神社
Ancient shrine in Kitakyushu, rebuilt multiple times, dedicated to imperial figures.
What it is
- Shrine founded in 860 by order of Emperor Seiwa.
- Enshrines Emperor Ōjin, Empress Jingū, and Munakata Sanjojin.
- Formerly known as Monji-sha and Monji Hachiman-gu.
- Adopted as tutelary deity by the Monji clan.

- Shrine buildings rebuilt by Minamoto no Noriyori.
- Land and buildings donated by Ashikaga Takauji in 1336.
- Shrine structures built by Ouchi clan and Mōri Motonari.
- Main shrine rebuilt by Mōri Motonori in 1868.
- Current shrine rebuilt in 1958 after air raid destruction.
