Mount Ariake

What it is

• A 2,268-meter high mountain in Nagano Prefecture within the Hida Mountains.
• Nicknamed Ariake Fuji because of its distinct trapezoidal shape.
• Selected as one of Japan's 200 Famous Mountains.
• Opened by ascetic monk Yukai in 1721 and climbed by Walter Weston in 1912.

What to see

• Ariakeyama Shrine located at the foot of the mountain.
• The summit area consisting of North, Middle, and South peaks.
