A 1,211-meter dormant volcano in Hokkaido offering a three-hour hike through the western end of the Niseko Mountains.

What it is

  • A Quaternary andesitic stratovolcano standing 1211.3 meters above sea level.
  • The westernmost peak of the Niseko Mountains in Hokkaido.
  • Part of the protected Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park.
  • A dormant peak that was active until approximately 800,000 years ago.

What to see

  • A first-class triangulation point located at the mountain peak.
  • Views of the surrounding ridge including Nakayama, Mikuni, and Horobetsu mountains.
  • The smaller Rokukuni mountain standing at an elevation of 234.2 meters.
  • Diverse volcanic landscapes within the borders of Iwanai and Rankoshi towns.

Getting there

  • The ascent from Asahi Onsen to the summit takes approximately three hours.
