Myōhō-ji Temple

Myohoji Temple is a Tendai temple known for its rare Sokushinbutsu, a mummified monk.
What it is
- A Tendai sect temple founded by Ennin.
- Originated from a hermitage built by Hirochigokushi.
- Rebuilt after being burned down during the Johei-Tengyo War.
What to see
- The principal image, Jizo Bodhisattva, survived a temple fire.
- A Sokushinbutsu (mummified monk) named Shun'gi Shonin.
- Shun'gi Shonin became a Sokushinbutsu in 1686.
