Nanzō-in Temple
南蔵院
Nanzō-in Temple: a historic Shingon-shu temple with ancient artifacts, easily accessible by train.
What it is
- A Shingon-shu Buzan-ha temple.
- Founded between 999 and 1004.
- Built as a bettō-ji for Kumano Gongen.
- Shoguns used it as a resting place.
What to see
- Several preserved itabi (stone grave markers).
- A kofun (ancient burial mound) behind the temple.
- Haniwa (clay figures) excavated from the kofun.
