Nikkō Seamount
日光海山
A massive submarine volcano south of Tokyo featuring a five-kilometer wide caldera and unique hydrothermal vent biological communities.
What it is
- A submarine volcano located at the northern end of the Mariana Arc.
- A conical structure also known as Nikko-ba covered with volcanic ejecta.
- The mountain rises approximately 2,900 meters from the seafloor.
- The base sits over 3,000 meters deep with a summit 392 meters below sea level.
What to see
- A large caldera at the summit with a diameter of five kilometers.
- Hydrothermal vent biological communities living at a depth of 459 meters.
- Discolored water has been observed at the site during periods of activity.
