Ōnohara Islands
大野原島
Uninhabited volcanic reefs west of Miyakejima offering a protected bird habitat and prime locations for fishing and scuba diving.
What it is
- A group of more than ten uninhabited reefs and rocks also known as Sanbondake.
- Part of the Izu Islands administered by Miyake Village in Tokyo.
- The entire area is designated as a National Park Special Protection Zone.
- Koyane serves as a protected habitat for the rare Japanese Murrelet.
What to see
- Koyane rock which reaches a height of 114 meters above the sea.
- Diverse marine life in the waters surrounding the rocky outcrops.
- Scientific monitoring stations installed on the rocks of Ohne and Magakune.
Getting there
- Boat departures are available from Ako Port on Miyakejima.
- The journey from the port to the islands takes thirty minutes.
