Gongyoji is a historic Buddhist temple in Osaka with a rare Momoyama period painting.

What it is

  • A Jodo Shinshu Takada-ha Buddhist temple.
  • Founded by the monk Keiko during 1573-1592.
  • Original name was Kuyasan Kosenji.
  • Moved to its current location by Tokugawa's order.

What to see

  • Colored silk painting of Tamahi-hime.
  • Painting is an Osaka Prefecture designated cultural property.
  • Tamahi-hime was the wife of Shinran Shonin.
  • Painting dates to the Momoyama period.
