Konpon Chūdō
延暦寺根本中堂
Konpon Chūdō is a historic temple hall on Mount Hiei, home to a 1200-year-old flame.
What it is
- Main hall of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei.
- Founded in 788 by Saichō.
- Rebuilt from 1634 to 1641 by Tokugawa Iemitsu.
- Designated a National Treasure in 1953.
What to see
- Statue of Yakushi Nyorai, the principal image.
- A lamp lit by Saichō, burning for 1200 years.
- Building made entirely of zelkova wood.
- Unique Tendai-zukuri structure inside.
- Inner sanctuary 3 meters lower than outer areas.
- Ceiling of the middle area depicts 200 flowers.
