This historic temple, founded in 1508, offers a glimpse into Nichiren's exile and Japan's largest yamamomo tree.

What it is

  • Sacred branch temple of the Hokke sect Jinmon-ryu.
  • Founded in 1508 by Shoshoin Nichiun.
  • Commemorates Nichiren's exile to Ito in 1261.
  • Nichiren stayed here until his pardon in 1263.

  • Temple grounds cover about 210,000 tsubo.
  • Kesa-kake no Matsu and Okyou-iwa are on the grounds.
  • Yamamomo tree is a national natural monument.
  • Yamamomo tree is 15m tall, 7.2m trunk circumference.
