Saihō-ji Temple is a historic Shinshu Otani temple with a 400-year-old pine tree.

What it is

  • A temple of the Shinshu Otani sect.
  • Founded in 1203 as Kōshō-ji Temple, a Tendai sect temple.
  • Converted to Jodo Shinshu in 1232.
  • Moved to current location and renamed in 1496.

What to see

  • Main hall construction began in 1800.
  • Bell tower, taiko-do, and earthen wall completed in 1863.
  • Main gate and entrance completed in 1914.
  • A 400-year-old pine tree, Mida-no-Matsu.
  • Kiyozawa Mitsuyuki Memorial Hall opened in 2004.
